Goal of the Day – January 2nd

Think Before Speaking

I have a big problem with quickly popping off when I hear something and not thinking through the consequences of my thoughtless response.  Many times, my emotional rush to respond has led to things being said that I’ve greatly regretted later or things being conveyed that actually made no sense when revisited.

So today I’m going to focus on thinking before speaking, and in that pause for thought, I want to see how differently things are perceived by those that I’m talking with.

    See Also: Think Before E-mailing

I have a problem with taking a work issue with me into a slower part of the day (usually evenings or weekends) having a glass of wine, or two, or three, and composing a seemingly brilliant communique of the Jerry MaGuire variety, spell checking as a form of content validation and clicking send. The next morning I wake up, remember my brilliant streak from the previous night, re-read the message to revel in my brilliance, and instead proceed to measure how deeply the foot has been inserted into the mouth. Depending on the severity and scope, apology calls and e-mails may ensue because the ‘Message Recall’ function doesn’t really work 🙁

Think of all the joy you create for your fellow man and woman with your elemental, unfiltered responses. Self control? Boring. Get rid of this goal.
